The kids were just a little excited about their first field trip being only one week away today! I'm so glad that so many of you are driving your cars to share this special event. As they get older, there are very strict guidelines for the number of parents involved in field trips. This was a great opportunity to take advantage of. Now let's hope for Fall temperatures next week!
Monday is Pumpkin Quest. Please send any of the following donations: 5 medium sized pumpkins to carve one scale to borrow to weigh the pumpkins bag of pumpkin seeds to eat one store bought pumpkin pie The kids are really enjoying the Science aspect of first grade this year. Please ask them about the Mystery Science Beaks experiment earlier this week. Have a great weekend! On a personal note, my mom, Mrs. Richard, came to help this week. She could not say enough about how much your children have grown and matured since she saw them last. She was so impressed with how respectful and gracious they were while working with her. She said each child gave her pleases, thank yous, and sweet compliments. Everyone who works with them says the same thing. What a wonderful group of kids and families. This Monday is our Pumpkin Quest. We would appreciate donations of the following:
5 medium sized pumpkins to carve one scale to borrow to weigh the pumpkins bag of pumpkin seeds. one store bought pumpkin pie I have three volunteers and would love one more. Please let my know if you can make it. What a week! We are almost done with September. I feel like I blinked and it's over! Reading groups are in full swing. Writing journal entries are getting longer and longer. Math tasks include words and not just numbers. What learning! We've had so many students increase 3 to 5 Fry List levels since school began. I am so proud! If your child is repeatedly coming home with the same flashcards, give an extra minute or two each day to help them memorize those words. I would like everyone to be on Fry List 7 or higher at this point. The top of the flashcards will tell you what Fry list that your child is working on. If your child is past Level 12, please continue to practice the Fry List but as a spelling activity. We are looking for new Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students) to join our family. Let us know if you are interested. A flyer will be sent home Wednesday with additional information.
Lots of information in the backpacks today! The Family Camp Out is this Friday. The cost is $20. Flyers are included in the homework folder. I'm sending the folders home a day early since today is the start of a PTA fundraiser and all of that information is also included. Homework folders are not due back until NEXT MONDAY.
Thanks for the quick return of the field trip forms and cash. We are so excited that so many parents are able to join us on this field trip. If you haven't yet, please take a look at the PARENTS page of this website and sign up for our Pumpkin Quest in October. I would love to have the help! If we get 4 parents, we will be able to carve pumpkins. If not, we'll just decorate them. Wow! Thanks for the wonderful response for chaperoning our first field trip! We had twice as many parents offer to ride the bus than we could accommodate. We drew names and I sent a text with the names of those parents who will be on the bus with us. All other paid parents will drive their own vehicles.
It’s time for our Family Campout! Join us for a fun night at Temple Heights Friday, September 22 5PM - Saturday, September 23 8AM. Pitch your tent on the grass and participate in fun activities. You may purchase tacos and snacks or bring your own meal. Can’t stay the night? No problem! The cost is $20 per family, whether or not you plan to spend the night. Flyers will come home in your child's homework folder on Tuesday. Please return your form and payment to the office by Wednesday, September 20. See you there! I am really liking the Class Dojo website. It is very meaningful to the students knowing that you see how their behavior was during the day. I encourage you to check in daily. They are very proud when they reach more than 7 points a day. On the other hand, it is very helpful for me when you see if your child is talking or off task and you discuss it with them. I always notice a big difference in their attitudes when they've shared their days with you.
Our Bates Nut Farm field trip is confirmed! It will be Friday, October 6. We can accept as many parent chaperones as we would like, but I am limited to only 4 parents seats on the bus. If we have more than 4 chaperones, you will have to drive your car separately. Paperwork will come home with your child tomorrow. Children will be $15 and Parent Chaperones will be $4. We got to participate in our first monthly science activity, Apple Quest, today. Thank you to the parents who volunteered materials and their time for the event. With an emphasis on observation and note taking, the students participated in the following activities.
Apple Prints with painting apples Difference between Sweetened and Unsweetened Applesauce Taste and texture of Fuji, Granny Smith, and Red Delicious Apples Artificial vs natural flavoring with Apple Jacks cereal We also sang apple songs and completed apple art. Tomorrow we will cook applesauce in a crockpot and complete poetry. We will also begin our Apple Quest Spark Adobe Video to share at Open House later this school year. Homework will be sent home Tuesday to be returned next Monday. This week is Coffee Talk with the principal at 7:30am in the MPR. Bike Club is immediately after school on Fridays. I'm sending the folders home a day early since today is the start of a PTA fundraiser and all of that information is also included. Homework folders are not due back until NEXT MONDAY.

You'll find their book bags look a bit different. These include the phonic reader of week and your child's flashcards. You can keep these at home until Monday, as well.

I would also appreciate donations of the following: 1 jar sweetened apple sauce 1 jar unsweetened apple sauce 1 bottle apple juice 3 fuji apples, 3 green apples, 3 red delicious apples 1 box of Apple Jacks cereal I did send a request for donations of personal headphones (not earbuds). As a grade level, we hope to cut back on sharing lice and germs by encouraging each child to have their own set. The ones you purchase have a much longer life than the ones we have at school to share. Thanks in advance! This week we are working on the following: *Short A and Short I words *Sentences with words for feelings *Understanding Addition *Science Observations *Social Studies Friendship *Leader In Me - Leadership Classroom This week has a minimum day on Wednesday for Staff Development and Coffee Talk with the principal at 7:30am in the Multipurpose Room.
