This Sunday, Honor Flight San Diego, is looking for members of the community to welcome home veterans from their visit the war memorials in Washington DC. San Diegans are invited to dress patriotically and meet at the San Diego Airport Terminal Two (American Airlines baggage claim) at 2:00pm this Sunday, October 2. Please consider joining my family for this event!
Incredibly, we have received a second package purchased from a group of strangers for our class through DonorsChoose.org. Today we opened three language arts games; locking letters, button letter, and an alphasensory box. The kids LOVED using them during centers rotations today. What fun, inviting and new ways to explore our letters and sounds. If you get a moment, please consider sending an email thanking DonorsChoose.org for these priceless classroom donations.
Tomorrow is the annual Temple Heights Family Campout. Looks like there is going to be some great weather to enjoy!
We are finishing our review of how to write and identify the letters of the alphabet. Next week we start phonics instruction with a concentration on one letter a week. The kids can successfully count to ten aloud but some are still working on counting objects individually from 1-10. We are working on our shapes and their unique attributes. We are learning to write sentences through shared writing. We construct the sentence aloud together and they copy mine from the starboard. We are learning how to use our fingers for spacing, when the capitals and periods go, and to keep lower case letters below the line. They are doing a great job!! We have started reading groups and sight words. The word of the week is THE.
If your child has flashcards in the homework folder, please practice nightly. Today I sent home the usernames and passwords for the computer programs you can use at home in the folders. Thanks to everyone for returning the green papers in such a timely fashion last week. Our major fall fundraiser starts today and the packets are in your child's backpack. Next Monday is Apple Day. The kids are getting excited. If you could like to volunteer, please let me know. Have a great week! Our class got to shop at the Farmer's Market that came to our school today. They each got $2 to spend and they are bringing home the fruits and vegetables they selected. Please make sure to wash them. This Farmers Market was brought to our school by our cafeteria WaveCrest Cafe and Food 4 Thought.
Please remember to return your Friday Folders tomorrow. Also, there is a bright green image release form that we need completed and returned tomorrow.
We are looking for volunteers to help us celebrate Apple Day on September 26. The students will participate in rotations from 10:30-12:30. Let me know if you can make it. You will rotate with our class.
We are in need of donations of one gallon size ziploc bags and plain, white paper plates... the cheap ones. Thanks in advance!
We finish out Nursery Rhymes this week and focus on writing letters O, P, Q, R, and S. I sent home another copy of the letter flashcards that your child needs to review before I reassess them in two weeks. Hopefully, by the end of September, they will be able to identify and write all 26 letters of the alphabet. We will begin phonics (letter sound) instruction at the end of the month. We started Reading Groups today. We have a great mix of kids and will be introducing books appropriate for each child's reading level. You can help with nightly reading to your child at home. Keep counting numbers 1-10 nightly. The kids are getting more accurate with their one-to-one counting. Those pesky 5s are still proving difficult to write though. Next week you will receive your child's username and password for our Lexia Core 5 account. Almost every child has memorized his or her picture password for ST Math so feel free to get started on that this week. Also, each child knows how to find his or her name on RazKids. The password is abc1. Both programs are live and ready for home use. Please return your RSVP to the Annual THE Family Campout if you plan to attend. Finally, there is a school news email sent home from Mrs. Morton every Sunday night. Please let me know if you haven't received it. Ask your kids what is the letter of the day? It's also fun to ask them to tell you words that start with the letter of the day.
This week we will be writing letters K, L, M, N, O, P. This week's nursery rhymes will include Twinkle, Twinkle, Three Little Kittens, Mary had a little lamb, and Hickory, Dickory, Dock. Rhyming can be difficult for some children so please play games at home that encourage rhyming words. For example, ask your child, "What rhymes with can?" You can also ask, "Does can rhyme with car?" We will assess both types of rhyming with the students this trimester.
We will continue to focus on counting, identifying, and writing numbers 1-10. We also begin our study of shapes. We will be working with and identifying circles, spheres, squares, rectangles, triangles, pyramids, and diamonds. The kids are getting so much better at writing their names. Please continue practicing at home. Also, keep working on those letter flashcards. I will begin retesting the kids at the end of September to see what letters they have mastered. Finally, almost all of the kids can enter their picture passwords to play ST Math. Give it a try at home. I will be sending home their usernames for Lexia in the next couple of weeks after I introduce the program to them here at school. We started playing last week and they are very excited about it. The first PTA meeting of the year is today at 6:00. We hope you can make it! Tomorrow, Wednesday, is Coffee Talk. This is an opportunity to hear what is going on at school from the principal. All parents are invited to attend. |
