Please remember that homework packet is not due until Monday. Tomorrow is picture day. We are scheduled for 8:30 photos so feel free to send fancy clothes and then shorts to change into afterward. I think we will still be on the Heat Schedule - inside recess though.
Thank you for returning the books bags as close to daily as you could. Rather than send home your child's small group reading books, I will be letting the kids choose AR books to bring home. The books will go home on Tuesdays with their homework folder and be returned with their homework folder on Mondays. They will be taking AR Reading Tests on these books every Monday. The next time the Book Bags will be coming home is next Tuesday.
Ok... flexibility is the name of the game. At Back to School Night I stated that I planned to send homework on a Monday - Friday schedule. Upon reviewing the packet today, I realize that we need to hop on the First Grade Bus. So I did send the homework folder home today but in the future it will be sent home on Tuesdays to be returned on Mondays. I will continue to send home the Book Bags Monday - Friday. We do read the books in class during the week so please be sure to keep them in the backpack everyday. The kids return them each morning to me.
This week we will have our first Math Test (measurement) and Spelling Test (short a words). We are reading realistic fiction and continuing our writing of labels and giving details. Math will round back to addition. Picture Day will be on Friday and we are scheduled to go early in the morning... no PE hairdos. Thank you to everyone who made it out last night! If you weren't able to make it, I will be sending a file home on Monday with all of the passcodes your child needs to complete online activities.
This week we have been studying what scientist is and does with an emphasis observation and science lingo. The kids learned about the water cycle last year. They bridged that knowledge to the three states of water today. We observed what happens when you place water balloons in the freezer. Once we removed the balloon, we conducted experiments on the remaining ice balls. We have focused on observation using hands, senses, and tools. We used wooden skewers, fingers, salt, and food coloring on the ice ball to observe changes and labeled information in our Science Journals. How Fun! Be sure to ask your child to tell you all about it this weekend. Please remember to send in Folders by Monday. Next week is Picture Day. We are slated for photos around 9:00am, before recess. Have a great weekend! The first grade Back to School Night presentation is tomorrow (Thursday, August 24) from 6:00-6:30pm in Room 108.
What a spectacular and historical day! We enjoyed watching the Solar Eclipse on the NASA live stream. Having visited the Kennedy Space Center this summer, I had lots of photos to share with the kids and we are all space happy. My class was indoors for the duration of the eclipse and did not get the view it outside. The school maintained a rainy day schedule to keep those precious eyes out of the sun.
This week I sent home the BOOK BAGS. These MUST be returned tomorrow. The kids will have them in their backpacks all week because we will use them both at school and at home daily. These books are NOT replaceable. Please be very careful with them. We will have homework folders coming home starting next Monday. Please send in a folder for your child by this Friday. Our focus this week: Reading: sequence of events, compare and contrast Spelling words: cat, sat, mat, rat, *go, *the, *on Writing: giving details Math: understanding addition - wholes, parts, addends We got a chance to meet our 3rd Grade Buddies today. We can't wait to meet with them every Monday. Today was a full back to work today. They should have some tired fingers and tired brains. I have sent a link to Class Dojo to your primary email addresses. If I saw that you did not open the link, I also sent an invite to your cell phone. Instead of green and red notes daily, you can check in on your child's daily behavior on the Class Dojo site.
We will begin "Big Kid Homework" on Monday. They will have a Book Bag come home each Monday. The books MUST remain in their backpacks as we will use them at different times during the week in class. I will change the books out every Friday. First Grade Homework packets will begin coming home in a couple of weeks. Please send in a homework folder (not binder) for your child on Monday. They love getting to pick our their very own. Also, please check the PARENTS page of the website. You can use the SignUp genius for special upcoming monthly events. Have a great weekend. Wow! What a day! It was such a treat to just jump into our day. We have a few new friends who have joined our TEAM this year. For those parents, you find updated information on the website multiple times a week. Please check back often.
I am excited to start learning clubs (reading and math groups) by Friday. So many taller heads and toothless smiles greeted me today! We got right into statistics and math observations today. Our first daily writing journal is completed. You'll find a pack of playdoh coming home that was used with our story Sylvester and the Magic Pebble. We will start our Reading Anthology tomorrow and see who can remember their ST Math codes by next week. Callie joined us for our usual morning... though the hours seemed to fly by. We played a word game earlier and I'm sending virtual hugs and high fives to you all! Thank you so much for your continued practice over the summer. The kids haven't missed a beat and really have confidence reviewing our old sight words. It was pulling teeth some days doing workbooks with my own kids over summer so I know how much work it is. The First Grade Team has so many exciting adventures up our sleeves! I can't wait to debut the new classroom to everyone on Wednesday.
