Dear Parent/Guardian, There has been a case(s) of Pertussis (whooping cough) at T.H.E. Leadership Academy. Your child may have been exposed to this highly contagious disease that causes severe coughing. Because no vaccine is 100% protective, even immunized persons can become ill with Pertussis, but the symptoms are usually milder. Pertussis is spread through the air when an ill person coughs or sneezes. Infants and young children are at highest risk of life threatening complications from the disease. Their symptoms most often include cold symptoms such as runny nose, slight fever, and occasional cough. The cough becomes worse, turning into coughing spasms that may be followed by:

Hello! My name is Rheanna Cowee and I am so excited to be student teaching in your child’s classroom! I am a graduate student at UC San Diego and will be graduating with a Master of Education and a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential this June. I will be getting to know your child and teaching from now until the end of the school year. I grew up in Tehachapi, CA, a small mountain town four hours north of San Diego. I graduated from SDSU in 2017 and have fallen in love with San Diego these past five years. In my free time I enjoy traveling, hiking, reading at the beach, and spending time with family and friends. I am thrilled to be spending these next five weeks in Mrs. Pence’s First grade classroom! Thank you for giving me the opportunity to learn and grow as a teacher by working with your child these next several weeks! I cannot wait to get to know your child more and help them foster a love for learning!
This week we are reading a story about two greedy bears. We are focusing on words with "or' and "ore" as we begin learning about our bossy R's. We finished our unit on time and have begun working with tables and graphs as our last unit for the year.

Music on the Green is coming up and the First Grade is responsible for a Beach Themed Basket for the silent auction. Please send any donations for this basket with your child this week. The play is this Thursday, April 25th. We will have a sack lunch picnic at school before we leave at 10:30am. We will return from the play at 12:45. For this special event, I invite the students to dress to impress in their picture day attire for this special arts experience at the Avo Theater.
This Thursday is our field trip to The Lion King Jr play at the Avo. We will enjoy our sack lunch picnic prior to leaving for the play. There are two notes coming home today - Altitude Fundraiser and Yearbook order form. Please check the backpacks for the information.
This week we continue addition, subtraction and fraction practice while introducing time. Please encourage your child to explain the difference between seconds, minutes and hours. Talking about 15 minutes ahead and 30 minutes after is a very helpful conversation. They will bring clock homes today to practice with you. In reading, we finished our story about grandparents. This week we focus on new friends and will be writing a letter to a new friend at a different school. Thank you to everyone who visited during the Open House last week. The kids were so excited to show off their projects. Just a reminder, I sent a Remind Text to share that we drew names for the TWO chaperones for our field trip - Mila's Parent and Ryan's Parent were drawn.
The homework folders have seen better days so they have been retired for the remainder of the year., The writing journals are most durable and will be the only thing going back and forth for homework now. This week, children can write 4-6 sentences describing what makes a grandparent(s) special to them. They can draw a picture when the writing is completed. The math paper is folded inside the journal. Please continue Lexia and RazKids reading practice daily. The energy on campus is electric! We are so excited to show off our Leadership and Learning this Thursday evening. Please join us from 6:00-7:00pm.
**Please have your child wear his or her Leadership Academy shirt or Jogathon shirt on Thursday. ** The blue and pink re-enrollment cards were sent home to all T.H.E. students today. Please fill them out and send them back tomorrow. The office needs them immediately.
This week we have a special homework packet coming home. We began our animals reports in the classroom and the children will complete their notes for homework this week. Please remind them to use complete sentences. We will use the notes your child takes at home to complete the final product here in class next week.
You will also find the last field trip permission slip in the homework folder today. Please send $10 CASH (no checks) with the signed permission slip for your child to attend. If you are interested in attending, email me or send a note and I will draw 2 PARENT NAMES on Wednesday. The Leprechaun Traps were fantastic....though unsuccessful. Lou, the Leprechaun left a huge mess AGAIN this year. He even built a trap of chairs to try to catch some kids. We were too smart for him though. This week we are working on geometric shapes and rain forest animals. As you plan for Spring Break, please consider a visit to the library. There are some creative and fun crafts and your children can check out books to read to you sleep. :)
ERASER DONATIONS NEEDED! We are grateful for any donation but the type you place on the pencil breaks too easily. We prefer to use hand erasers please.
* The kids sure enjoyed eating waffles while we read our weekly story on Friday! This week will have a more messy type of fun to go with our story. Here's a hint, don't wear your favorite outfit on Thursday! * This week is Read Across America Week. * Homework and Reading Help is available Mondays-Thursdays at the Vista Library from 4:00-6:00pm. * Earth Month has placed a collection box outside of the office to recycle clothing, shoes, blankets, sheets, etc. to help the homeless and in turn donates money to THE Leadership Academy per pound of donations. Please donate! February 25 through March 1 is Read Across America Week. This year's theme is Hats Off To Reading. Please wear a hat on Monday, February 25 to show your school spirit!
This Friday is Pajama Day and the surprises don't stop there! Please remember to leave your blankets, pillows, and stuffed animals at home. Don't forget to wear your regular school shoes for PE and recess.
We will have a very small Valentine's Breakfast Party next Thursday, February 14th. We have 25 students in our class. I will send a list of students home today. If you would like to donate juice boxes, mini water bottles, mini muffins, or gogurts for our Valentines Breakfast, please let me know.
Dear Parents,
You play a critical role in the planning of our school programs, and we need your help in advocating for all students. Assistant Superintendent of Innovation, Matt Doyle, will visit THE Leadership Academy to collect your feedback regarding proposed budgeting for the 2019-2020 school year. This is a great opportunity to share your ideas, what is positively impacting your student’s achievement, and what you think could be added, refined, or changed in Vista Unified School District. Please join us for a very important meeting on Wednesday, February 20 at 2:30 p.m. Childcare will be provided. Please contact your community liaison, Patty Landeros, with any questions you may have. [email protected] 760-631-6242 X43006. That was exciting!! The kids did a great job getting through the first thunder and lightning of the year. We even counted how many times the word THUNDER was used in the Imagine Dragons Thunder song.
Friday is the last day of Kindness Week. Please wear a School Spirit shirt or school colors unless... Tomorrow is also Spring Picture Day! |
