As we head into the second half of the school year, we are making some changes with homework. You will see a new list of reading words. These should be kept in the Homework Folder as we will work on these two pages through February. They are the words from the flashcards but now shown in sentence form. We will also continue writing but now the students will use their writing journal instead. Please keep this journal in their backpack at all times. They will read their paragraph to the class on Fridays. Please have them practice reading their journal entries to you before Friday. I have also added a page of math homework. You can still access any of the online activities available. If your child has a paper folder from me, please try to purchase a new pocket folder and send it in this Friday. As a reference, your child should be to: *read most of the sentences quickly without sounding out words and with few mistakes. *complete 3-4 sentences with correct capitalization, punctuation, and at least 4 -6 words per sentence independently. *complete most of the math homework independently This week we are reading The Sleeping Pig and learning about contractions. We will still be practicing the silent E words, as well. We are writing about our goals for the new years. It sounds like you have lots of clean rooms in your future! Encourage your child to share their goals and how they plan to meet them. We are also working on descriptive paragraphs this week. During math we are focusing on both subtraction and place value. Students will benefit from nightly practice of addition and subtraction flashcards to help their automaticity.
I am reassessing their sight words and will send a new set of flashcards home on Friday with next week's homework. There is not a homework folder this week but, hopefully, you are continuing your routine of reading daily. The kids had an incredible voyage on The Polar Express this morning. Over the break, please continue to read daily, write stories, and practice reading and spelling the words below. Merry Christmas!

Please remember to send a sack lunch with your child in a container that can be tossed after eating.
Thank you for sending the conference request forms back so quickly. Your confirmed date and time in your child's backpack this afternoon. I sent home a paper to request your parent conference date and time the first week of November. There will be minimum days all week. Please send it back with your first and second choices.
This week's story is called Seasons. We'll learn how people do different things during different seasons and what animals do to prepare for the changes. We are working on addition and subtraction to 10 during math activities. Our narratives are getting longer and we are focusing on the inclusion of adjectives.
Today we ended our theme of Observation in science with an incredible underwater hands on experience courtesy of Ms. Blasius. The students were able to touch a sea star, sea urchin, sea snail, hermit crab, and sea cucumber. It was a wonderful opportunity to observe using all of their senses. We are looking forward to Thursday. Don't forget to send a sack lunch! The following parents are riding on the bus. - Charlotte's parent and Kimberly's parent
The following parents are attending but must drive their own vehicles. Wyatt's parent Gavin's parent Everardo's parent Jasmine's parent Ryan's parent Mila's parent Justin's parent Adam's parent Jazlynn's parent Alexanders's parent I'm sorry but the due date has past and no additional parents can be added. We will have more field trips that you can attend during the school year. Congratulations to our Leadership Spotlight Award Winners for September - Damian, Mila, and Zane!
Please return the Permission Slips and money for the Field Trip by this Wednesday. This week we begin working on short "U" vowel sounds. We are working with addition and subtraction facts up to 12. Our personal narrative writing will be culminating in an independent project at school this week. In science we are observing apples on Friday. If you'd like, please send in one apple with your child to share by this Friday. Watch DOGS Pizza and Kids Night is September 27. We hope many of you will be able to attend. Please return your sign up sheet asap. You can get a new one in the office, if necessary. I sent home the Bates Nut Farm permission slips today. Bright Yellow - can't miss them! Chaperone admission is $5 and this DOES NOT include a pumpkin.
Bus seating is limited to two chaperones per classroom. I will draw names out of a hat on Wednesday, September 26 for two adults to ride the bus. All other chaperones must take their own car or carpool. Please return the paperwork with a check or by paying online asap. This week we are reading two stories "What Can a Vet Do?" and "Hot Fox Soup". Our phonics emphasis is short "E' sounds. In writing we are focusing on personal narratives and looking to add another sentence to our stories. Math is all about addition and sums. Science continues to focus on making observations and looking for patterns.
Please return your child's permission slip for A+ Dentistry if he or she will be participating by this Wednesday, Sept 19. This weekend is the Family Campout at T.H.E. Leadership Academy. Saturday morning will also be a fundraising breakfast at IHOP from 8:00am-12:00pm. Save the Date: Bates Nut Farm Field Trip will be Thursday, October 4th. All parents are welcome to join, but bus space will be limited so personal cars will be needed. More information to come, please DO NOT rsvp at this time. - Save the Date only This week we have a writing task assigned again. We have been reading a story called Wigs in a Box. The kids have talked about lots of funny and surprising things they would like to find in a box. Encourage them to be creative in their writing this week. Use descriptive words like to describe what mystery they would find in the box. Each child should be able to write 2 complete sentences including capitals, finger spacing, and punctuation. Thanks for your help at home!
So often I'm asked the same question. How do I help my child be successful? Check out the P.A.L. Plan link that I added to the website. It's the plan I used when I tutored children after school. You can use the FRY List words, the short vowel (a, e, i, o, u) lists I gave you at Back to School Night, or you can make up words as we go along using the Words of the Week (under my photo) as a guide.
We are very excited for our Reuben H. Fleet Assembly THIS Thursday, September 13. Please return your $4 donation per child as soon as possible.
This week I did not include a writing page in the Friday Folder. Instead, I would like to work on the students' speaking skills. I have asked to students to bring in jokes or riddles to share with the class. They will be working on speaking clearly, loudly, and making eye contact. Your kids can write down a joke or memorize it to share. They are also encouraged to bring in more than one joke. I look forward to hearing what they come up with. This week we will be reading the stories, The Box and Wigs in a Box. We will be focusing on short "o" vowels. In math we are working on addition to 10. Writing tasks are built around the narrative type of writing. |
